Halloween 2016 Continued

Halloween is my favorite holiday for decorating. Last year, I went for a low budget spooky witch house to compliment the exterior of my pre-renovation house. Considering that we opened up the front porch, ripped out the massive driveway, painted everything, and got new landscaping, the yard trash look of 2015 was not going to work this year.

J lovingly (possibly under duress) agreed to help make the spider of my dreams. Yes, my dreams. I worded the request very carefully because J prefers to call a project good enough way before it is perfect. While my spider did make his debut October 2, Hurricane Matthew sent him back into hiding. Now he is back and better than ever.

My pallet signs from last year fit with the theme. The spider web is made from landscaping burlap, sewed into tubes, stitched in place, and spray painted white. I also used two cans of glitter spray paint and it was pretty worthless. I may get out there with some glitter mixed with mod podge this weekend. Glitter is always appropriate for Halloween.

We followed this guide for making the spider, with some modifications. For one, we bent the pvc legs with a heat gun rather than cutting and using angled fittings. Our body and head have an interior frame of wood dowels and tension wire and are covered in weed barrier landscaping fabric. We also had to drill holes and use pins to hold the legs in place. The spider guide was meant for a spider that stays on the ground rather than being hoisted onto a roof with a pulley. Our eyes are made from a styrofoam ball cut in half, painted with silver glitter, then covered with silver sequins. That task was as painstaking and boring as you might imagine.

I am already thinking about what to add next year - possibly some smaller (and less labor intensive) companion spiders and more webbing stretched out across the rest of the facade. J is just happy to have weekends free of spider manufacturing. 

Curb Appeal, Stage 1

Now that we are relatively settled inside the house, I have turned my attentions outward. Here is the facade of my house, or at least it was until recently. Many of the old houses in my neighborhood have front porches that were closed in with awning windows a few decades after being built. I prefer a more original look, so J and I did a bit of demo.

Much better, right? There is still a lot of work that needs to be done, but I am saving that for my carpenter. I wasn't interested in watching J take a sledgehammer any closer to the columns than he already did. And in the pursuit of efficiency and good timing, we did all the work the day after Halloween. Why remove the Halloween construction paper bats when you can just yank out all the windows?

Happy Anniversary!

Today J and I are celebrating our second wedding anniversary. We are going on a short trip next week, but celebrated with grape leaves and chocolate for now. Yum!

Weekend Plans

Briana is off to Ohio to visit J's family for the weekend.  I think she plans on doing some thrift store shopping and also checking out some fabric stores (she informed me today that she is seriously lacking in options in her town).  Besides hittin' up zumba class and gettin' my hair did, I'm hoping to get over to Home Depot to grab some pots to plant mint, basil, and hot pepper plants for my summer "garden" on our patio.  I probably won't get around to planting this weekend, because I've got some ideas to spruce up your typical terracotta pots (stay tuned!).  I'm also planning on making my first angel food cake of the season in my new pan for Bible study on Sunday if I can find decent berries or peaches (yay for fruit season!).  I also have an urge to go thrifting, so I'm going to see what is close by in D.C. that might be worth checking out.  Other than that, I think my allergies have finally subsided enough for us to enjoy some outdoor weather and go for a walk or sit outside for dinner.  Hope you do the same!  Have a great weekend everyone!  Let us know what fun plans you have going on this weekend!

Weekend Activities

Hey y'all! Even though I don't dread Mondays, I find that I appreciate my weekends a bit more now that I go into an office in the afternoons. I have also learned that since I am not at all a morning person (as Melinda learned while hosting me for a summer), I have to devote some of my weekend time to chores. It is almost as if I am a real adult or something. 

Despite my groundbreaking realizations and the mountains of housework that had piled up, J and I managed to have some fun. We tried out a local restaurant Cang Tong for the first time and it was wonderful! The menu had both Chinese and Japanese dishes and sushi as well. Sometimes ethnic restaurants can't make it in our more rural setting but I was happy to see that there was a long line when we left.

J also squeezed orange juice. So yummy! Our local farm was selling juice oranges by the bucket, but we were able to grab half a bucket's worth for $4 - more suitable for a two person household. We still have over half the oranges left, too. By the way, that monogrammed glass pictured is part of a set my sister Kimberlee gave me as part of our wedding gift. She found a set of 9 at a thrift store and knew I would love them.

 It was prom weekend in my town, so I got to do my niece's makeup. She was so pretty! Of course, I snapped a picture of her with the awesome sunglasses I gave as a birthday present, so you can't see the eye makeup.

Normally, my two older sisters and I take turns hosting everyone for Sunday lunch. This month is a bit busy so we decided to skip until May. My sister Bekah organized a Taco Bell event Saturday night so we could still all get together. After eating out two nights in a row, J and I were in serious need of a healthy meal. I made hummus, chicken, quinoa, along with a variety of cut up vegetables.

One of my favorite parts of this meal is getting to use one of my Anna Weatherly platters. So overall, great weekend! Did y'all do anything fun/new/exciting? Make sure to come back tomorrow for my exciting DIY project that I actually completed! 

Great Weekend!

I had a wonderful weekend. This Saturday was the Ladies Tea at my church. The theme this year was decades, so volunteers teamed up to put on a fashion show demonstrating styles of the past. Mrs. Loveless, a family friend and wonderful seamstress, asked me to be her model for the 1960s. Of course I said yes - I can't resist playing dress up!

Mrs. Loveless made a minidress for me in the style of what she wore in high school during the 60s. She made all her own clothes during that time and also did updos for all her girlfriends. I was totally up for having my hair styled huge and I was not disappointed by her talents. Shockingly enough, the updo only took her 15-20 minutes! I wonder if she would do my hair on a weekly basis..

Yesterday, I met up with two of my sisters and their kids (plus a brother-in-law) for a lake day. I am so sorry for those of y'all still suffering through winter; spring is happening here in Florida! The younger kids played in the water while we sunned ourselves. I eventually had to move into the shade to avoid burning (pretty sure my back still got burnt), but I am definitely less pale than before!

J and I also had fun visiting Lowes. We had been discussing future appliances (read more about our house hunting list) and he thought a 2.2 cubic foot washing machine would be plenty. I disagreed because our bath sheets take up quite a bit of space. We solved the issue by looking into a floor model of that size and guess who was right? Me, of course. I prefer to do small loads of laundry, but the washing machine needs to be at least 3 cubic feet for our larger things. While I typically support locally owned stores, I think only our chain stores sell appliances in town. Regardless, J and I have no reason to purchase those sorts of things now, but it is always fun to discuss!

I also tried a new recipe today, totally made up by me (with help from J). I thought we had chicken defrosted, but it turned out to be small strips of pork tenderloin. J normally cooks pork in this household, but since he was working late I had to figure it out. I ended up coating it in a flour mixture (garlic powder, salt, cumin, black pepper), cooking it in olive oil and my cast iron on the stove top, and serving it with rice, greek yogurt, vinegar soaked cucumber, and black olives. Odd to some, but I loved it! J said I did not dry the pork out, which makes this my first successful pork meal - only took over a year of marriage.

Melinda and I have decided to make an effort to include more personal updates on Posh Purpose. We really enjoy reading these types of posts on our favorite blogs, and we hope you enjoy ours too! Did y'all have great weekends? I know Melinda's was busy but in a good way.

House Hunting: I'm Just Looking Edition

Since J's company has shown significant growth since the beginning of 2014, we have started talking about what we might want in a house. We aren't at a point where we are ready to call up a real estate agent, but I like to get an idea of what his expectations are and also what my hometown has to offer. I love to pull up websites like trulia and zillow just to see what the insides of houses look like (Melinda shares this hobby). I also like looking at all the available houses to gauge J's opinions. He isn't the best at describing what he likes and dislikes, but he can usually form an opinion when given a picture.

Of course, J and I have totally different opinions on the ideal first house. My family is in the construction industry so remodeling is just part of normal life. J, on the other hand, would much rather just be able to move into a house without having to tear down any walls. No fun, I tell you. However, after much discussion and showing him what our small area has to offer, he is warming up to the concept of fixing up.

One of the reasons why I know we will end up with a house that needs work is because I despise 1990s and early 2000s houses. They lack character and I need a home with character. Good news is that my town used to be a big deal back in the 1920s and so we have a TON of houses from that era. J loves the idea of a 20's house now because the ceilings are almost always high, and at 6'4" that is important to him. The houses tend to be smaller, as well, because they were typically vacation homes. Less square footage means less air conditioning in the summer, which means lower electricity bills - also valued by J.

Right now we are living in a tiny apartment, which has taught me the importance of storage space. I have lots of stuff and keep accumulating more. Basically, I need a whole room just for my wardrobe. That room could also contain my many thrift store purchases if necessary, but storing my clothes, shoes, purses, and accessories is a huge deal. And J would love to have space for a workshop.

J and I put together a list of things that our first house needs to have, qualities that would be nice to have and a few things that are not necessary. Once we officially start looking at houses, we will reference back to our list and probably modify a bit. Until then, we will just admire while we take walks or drive around town.

Need to have

- 3 bedrooms - The master bedroom does not have to be huge as long as it has space for our california king size bed and two night stands without feeling cramped. We need a guest room for when family and friends come to visit. And the third room would be for my closet. J is tired of looking at all my stuff.

- 2 full bathrooms - We currently have one bathroom which is only accessible through our bedroom. Two full bathrooms would be ideal without adding too much to the household chores. J insists that we don't have a pedestal sink in the master bathroom.

- High ceilings - J and I love the 10 foot ceilings in our apartment and would hate to go back to 8 feet. Also, my bed has a canopy and I would hate to not be able to use it. Right now we don't have it up because there is a ceiling fan in the way, but I don't have a problem removing those in my own home.

- Good kitchen - My current kitchen can hold a lot. It is too small for both J and I to cook comfortably together but it is perfect for just one person cooking. While we would love more space, we really just need the next kitchen to be at least as good as this one. That means having enough storage space for all my dishes and other kitchen things along with a pantry.

- Parking for two - Right now we only have one car, but J will be getting a car eventually. This means we need to have easy access parking for two vehicles.

- Storage space - I hate living with my vacuum. My tiny apartment does not have a closet to store it so the thing just hangs out wherever I leave it. You don't really think about vacuum space until you don't have it, but it is really important! I need my home to have somewhere to keep those things that are necessary for every day life, but still not something you want to stare at.

- Contemporary wiring - Since we have so many old houses around the area, you have to be careful about the wiring before purchasing. My parents house had the original silk covered electrical wires when they bought the house. It is an expensive fix, so I would only make an exception to this requirement if we were getting a ridiculously good deal on the house. 

- Air conditioning - We need it in Florida, but some houses still rely on window units. No thanks. But as for the wiring, I would make an exception if the price was really really good.

- Windows - Windows are very important to J and I agree. We don't want a dark home.

- Grill space - J loves grilling and I love not cooking, so we need space in the yard for a grill.

Nice to have

- Butler's pantry - After I explained the concept to J, he decided he needs a butler's pantry in his life. However, it is not necessary but would be a fun perk.

- Gas stove with six burners - I love cooking on gas stoves. My mom has one and our Las Vegas apartment did too. J wants six burners. At the very least, we would be excited to have the gas hook up already installed.

- Parking for more - I have a big family that comes over for lunch almost every third Sunday. While street parking is legal in my town, it would be great to have extra space in the driveway for all those vehicles.

- Formal dining space - J cares nothing about this, but I love tables. I could buy another table if I had a formal dining space.

Not needed

- Big yard - J isn't thrilled about mowing and I'm not a gardener. We don't really want a large yard at this point. 

- Second story - We don't care one way or the other if we have a second story

- Formal living room - I don't need a formal living room. It is more important that I can host my giant family in the space without being too split up.

- Good paint choices - It is so silly when people on House Hunters complain about the paint colors. Paint is such an easy fix!

I know we will be adding to this list and altering it, but it is a great start. Once Melinda gets into town (this weekend!) we will drive around and admire some more. Can't wait!

Big City vs. Small Town

Reading Melinda's Valentines Day plans in D.C. and writing up my plans in our small town got me thinking about the pros and cons of each situation. I even made a very pink image to summarize these differences to practice using photoshop.

One major annoyance that I experienced while living in Boston was extremely limited parking. Even if you were happy to pay for parking, finding an open spot was still challenging. Now that I live in my hometown, parking is never an issue. The spots on the street in front of our restaurant on Valentines Day were taken, but there was an entirely empty parking lot less than a block away. Yay small towns!

D.C. has a ton of really exciting options for special occasions, from things to go see to interesting foods. Small towns tend to have a small number of restaurants and entertainment venues, which means your choices are few. Usually, those restaurants are more regional and less likely to have exciting ethnic foods like North African or grape leaves of all varieties. Boston has both.

And of course, cost is very different depending on your location. J and I spent less than $30 on our Valentine's Day meal. That includes two entrees and an appetizer but not drinks because their coke machine was making flat soda, so we switched them out for water. If J had ordered a beer and I had kept my coke, it would still have been less than $35. Melinda opted to dine in and go out for dessert to avoid the high prix fixe menus that start at $75 per person. J and I never had prix fixe menus in Boston or Las Vegas for Valentine's Day, but we also never had a $35 date at a real restaurant.

Both big cities and small towns have their pros and cons. Big cities are more expensive and difficult, but the attractions make it worth fighting for a cab or parking while spending more money. Small towns are more easy going and you can get a really good meal without spending a ton or waiting forever in lines because you didn't call four weeks in advance to make your reservation. Regardless of your situation, Melinda and I believe that it is best to focus on the positives (Melinda with her Ritz chocolate after dining in and me with my delicious and reasonably priced hamburger) rather than pining after what you don't have. That being said, I really do miss my Boston grape leaves!

Let the Love Fest Begin!

Happy Valentine's Day!  I waited until this morning to type up this post, because I wasn't sure how badly the snow would affect my Valentine's Day plans with Mr.3.  Luckily, it looks like we be able to dig our car out so we can get around town to take care of our Valentine's Day plans.  As I mentioned before, I'm not a fan of the pricey dinners that D.C. has to offer, so we are heading to the store to pick up two lobsters, a bottle of wine, and I've already got the ingredients for my browned butter balsamic roasted asparagus.  After dinner, we are headed over to the Ritz Carlton for its chocolate buffet (which I'm SUPER excited about...although slightly appalled by the idea of white chocolate soup with lemon thyme ).  Tomorrow, of course, I will be heading to the gym for some post-gluttony calorie burning, but I don't need to think about that today!

My Valentines Day Plans

Valentines Day is not a huge event for me. I really just go along with it because I love receiving presents. J happens to love giving me presents, so February 14th is a fun occasion all around. It is also a day that I don't have to cook, although that is slightly less of a perk now that J and I share the cooking responsibilities.

Our first Valentines Day while dating back in 2011 was split into two days. I had choir class the evening of the actual day, so going out to eat was not an option. Instead, J surprised me with a giant bear (I love giant stuffed bears) and cooked my favorite meal of his: super spicy/vinegary pork and onions. Yum! We went out to eat the following Friday. Our next Valentines Day was spent at Boston's amazing southern restaurant Hungry Mother. The food is legitimately delicious, even if they try to get a bit creative with our southern favorites. We did not celebrate on February 14th that year either because J's grandmother passed away and he was on a plane back from her funeral. Our third Valentines was right after we got married and were living in Las Vegas. J made reservations at a Peruvian restaurant. My little sister wondered why on earth he would take me there, since I do not particularly care for meat or potatoes. She always thinks she should be consulted on restaurant choices. And she is probably right; I did not really like the food, but it was still a fun experience. 

This is now our fourth Valentines Day together - fourth! crazy! - and the celebration has already begun. J was in Boston this past week for a business trip and was so sweet to bring me a box of my favorite artisan chocolates. If you follow us on twitter, you already spotted the picture. 

 

We also have reservations at a new locally owned restaurant, Bricks Bar and Grill. I know I will like the food as long as my hamburger is well done (cue baby sister wincing in embarrassment). And that stuffed pickle is definitely happening. If the results are tasty, I will be taking Melinda back with me during her spring break trip (yay!). J and I try to support locally owned businesses as much as possible. On the rare occasions we go out to eat, we usually pick a small local place over one of the many chains in the area. We will probably stop working earlier than normal and head over to the local tattoo and piercing place so I can get my tragus earring replaced. The crystal fell out and I am not in love with the empty metal post look. Nothing says Valentines Day like jewelry and chocolate, although in this case the jewelry is cheaper than the chocolate.

Thrift Store Chair

J and I went into Habitat the other day because I wanted to show him a $5 set of demitasse cups, but sadly they were gone! However, I was very quickly cheered up when I spotted this $35 chair.

Merry Christmas to me - J bought it as an early gift! It is a gift for me obviously, because J would never choose a pink chair for his own enjoyment, but it is also a gift for him because the chair requires no work at all. No need for sand paper or staple guns, this chair was ready to go after a quick vacuum. So excited! Once I clear up the wrapping paper disaster, I will share a picture of the whole sitting area. The chair is so charming with my couch!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone is enjoying time with family, friends, food, and football (or any combination of the above that makes you happy). We are very thankful for our readers and for the growth we have seen since getting back to regularly scheduled blogging. Melinda and I enjoy writing Posh Purpose together - it is our long distance project to fill in for all the other fun projects we would love to do together but can't because of geography. We hope that y'all enjoy reading along with us!

I am also thankful for almost one whole year of being married to J, despite two cross country moves ;) We are celebrating our one year anniversary on Sunday!

Hello From Ohio!

J and I have been having a great time in Ohio. I have done a ton of thrift store and second hand Christmas shopping, and a bit of crafting as well (check out Posh Purpose on Twitter for a sneak peek). We also visited the local apple orchard for freshly made apple cider and apple donuts - my fave! The leaves have been beautiful, and Ohio even threw in a bit of snow for us - not my fave! We fly back to warm, sunny Florida tomorrow. Even though I am looking forward to defrosting and retiring my boots and socks for a few more months, I have had a great time visiting with J's family and experiencing a bit of fall and early winter. I am certainly not a photographer, but I hope you still enjoy my iphone pictures!

Ohio

I am on my way to Ohio to see J's family for a week. Although I will most likely return as a human popsicle, I am looking forward to visiting with his mom and aunts and maybe hitting up a few thrift stores. Also, there are wonderful apple donuts waiting for me in the frozen tundra :) My MIT roommate grew up in the Midwest with apple donuts so she was amused by how excited this Florida girl is to get her hands on a few (or 10). Melinda will keep y'all entertained with lots of updates on her patio project!

Habitat Strikes Again

I went into Habitat for Humanity at the beginning of this week to search for gift ideas. My siblings and I are giving each other $5 gifts for Christmas - the rule is handmade or used, not new. It is a lot of fun to get creative about how to make thrift store stuff work for so many different people (Each couple is buying 6 gifts!). I bought a $2 gift item, but also discovered a new piece of furniture I just had to have. But I resisted!

Until yesterday... I went back with J, hoping it would still be there. We had a minor moment of panic when we didn't immediately see it, but good news is that nobody had bought it yet. Let me introduce you to my $15 end table/nightstand:

Please excuse the poor lighting and ugly flooring. Habitat is not known for their lovely decor. The entire thing needs to be sanded down and restored, but the drawers are so unique and the hardware is awesome. And you can't beat $!5. I am so excited to get started! Of course, I still have to finish the chairs and this weird thing:

I am also working on a wreath with glitter and magnolia pods. J said I need to finish at least one of my current projects before I can buy any more Habitat furniture. He just doesn't get it :)

New Look

Melinda and I got busy last night and redesigned Posh Purpose with a lot of help from J. We had grown bored of our previous look and had found a few fun blogger designs available for purchase. However, we realized we could customize our own look for free after J kindly agreed to assist. We are thrilled to debut our new look - hope you enjoy!

Proposal Anniversary

J proposed to me this day, two years ago. It was exactly one day before the one year anniversary of us meeting each other. We were actually engaged for longer than we dated. While I don't have any pictures of us from that day, I thought I would share one from a few weeks earlier. Love him!

And Briana Has Moved Again

In the last life update, I had moved to Vegas and had one place setting of china in the apartment. Things have definitely changed, however. J and I have moved back to my hometown in Florida. J has started a company with a friend from MIT and has another project with my father. I have also recently became involved in a startup and I am so excited about it. More info to come :)

We are loving living less than 3 minutes from my two older sisters and my parents. My brother only lives about 12 minutes away. One of my sisters had a baby back in March, so you can imagine how much fun I am having. J has turned out to be quite the baby hog, which is pretty impressive considering that my family is already full of baby hogs.

We moved just in time to catch Melinda on her Florida vacation! Melinda and I had not seen each other since my wedding and we were definitely in need of some cousin time. She helped me pick out a rug for the front door (Florida sand is an ever present annoyance) and a pretty trashcan for the bathroom. Actually, she picked both out with very little help from me AND the trashcan was priced at a huge discount! Apparently, I do not look through the shelves as thoroughly as I should because I had not even seen it when I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond the previous week. I was actually so frustrated during that trip that I decided I would not buy anything until Melinda came to visit. She is such a great cousin :)

J loves working for himself and I love being in my favorite state. We are quite happy with the huge change. We are currently living in one of the cute apartments my parents own. While it is much smaller than our previous place in Vegas, I am making it work (we have a storage unit). While I don't love sleeping right next to a mobile garment rack full of my dresses, I do appreciate that I can vacuum the entire place with only one outlet - it is great not having to move the vacuum plug around! Small victories, right? I am looking forward to blogging about the apartment, and hopefully there is a house hunt in our future.

 

Now that the wedding and moving/packing/unpacking for two cross country moves chaos is over, I will be dedicating more time to Posh Purpose. Also, can you believe Melinda has been married for one year (and a day)! It does not seem like a whole year has passed!

Life After "But I'm the Bride!" is no Longer a Valid Reason

And I'm back :)

J and I had a great honeymoon at the Ritz in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The weather was lovely almost every day, so I spent my time alternating between laying by the pool and laying on the beach, both of which required a giant umbrella and lots of sunscreen. By lots of sunscreen, I personally used almost an entire tube of Neutragena SPF 45 in a week.

The Ritz Carleton was quite lovely and I have no complaints at all. However, I did notice a few things that led me to believe that the San Juan Ritz is not as nice as the one in Buckhead (lodgings of many childhood December trips and my bachelorette party weekend). For example, the turn down service people forgot to leave the chocolates more than once (gasp!) and sometimes a bath towel (still damp) would be left over after housekeeping came through. The chocolates were super cute, though! The wrappers (on the right) had a picture of a coqui, the same Puerto Rican frog that is very noisy in a pleasant, tropical way all night long.

Now I spend my time "organizing" and "keeping house" - the apartment is a bit of a disaster, or as much of one as it can be given that hardly any of my stuff or wedding gifts are here yet and that there is very little furniture. I've learned a few important lessons: 

1 - drying towels on low takes forever. 

2 - drying a huge wad of sheets and then forgetting about them for a while will result in very wrinkled sheets. 

3 - ironing sucks, avoid it at all costs (learned this one as a direct result of #2). 

Now that I have imparted valuable and, I'm sure, quite unknown advice, I will follow this post up with a recipe I made the other night for supper. It was quite delicious (J's hot and sour soup was not) and I was able to use my new Staub grill pan! Also, since I will not be decorating for Christmas, please accept my new sister-in-law's Christmas decor blog post instead.

Briana is Married!

Just wanted to update our readers!  Briana is married and off to her honeymoon in Puerto Rico.  I was super busy with maid duties and visitin' with family members (i.e. running my mouth), so I didn't take any pictures at Briana's wedding and I had to rely upon the Facebook community for its posts (which is the reason for the delay).

 

The wedding was beautiful, Briana and J looked so happy...all of which caused me to cry pretty much the entire ceremony.  Briana will post more pictures later, but here is a sneak peak from the backyard of her house where the reception was held.
