In our second installment of the series, on "What to Wear" holiday edition, we are discussing cocktail parties, which I believe has a different set of requirements from a corporate party (for corporate party looks check out our articles
here and
here). While a corporate party is all about showing your company that you know how to behave appropriately (and rock that next performance review!), a cocktail party with friends or neighbors is all about being fun, festive, and looking cute under the mistletoe! You can definitely show off your shoulders and leave the jacket in the coat closet. I love this one-shouldered dress - sexy and unexpected.
If it's really cold, one of my favorite things to wear is a pair of black velvet pants. They are slimming and fancy enough for the holidays. I own these very affordable ones from Banana Republic - $110 but they seem to be running 40% off sales regularly. I like that they are ankle length...no extra $$$ for hemming!
If you've got the body type to carry off a print on your lower half, I also like the subtle texture on these dressy pants:
Pair the pants with a sparkly top. I'm looooving this top from Tory Burch - but at $395, it's a waaay out of budget.
Here are several other budget friendly tops to consider:
All of these tops can be re-worn with jeans for a night out with your significant other and you can pair them with a black pencil skirt, that you likely already own, if you have other parties to go to. Whichever route you go, throw in a great clutch (they say "fancy pants" and holiday cheer way more than you work bag you throw your yogurt and the rest of your worldly possessions in every day) and a fun pair of shoes. I'll be offering up my suggestions for those later in the week!
